Category Descriptions

  • Please read the descriptions carefully. It is the entrant’s responsibility to select the appropriate category. Quilts that do not meet the category guidelines will be judged, but will not be eligible for ribbon consideration.
  • False backs are not allowed except in the Miscellaneous category. A false back is defined as a backing that is added after the quilting is completed so that no stitching shows on the back of the quilt.
AppliqueA quilt with applique as the primary technique. Any size.
Art QuiltAny technique. These quilts may include surface design applications, including, but not limited to, threadwork, painting, discharging, foiling, and photo imagery. Pictorial quilts should be entered in this category. Must be an original design. Any size.
Bed QuiltA quilt meant to be used on a bed. Any technique. Quilt must have a perimeter greater than 300 inches.
Block of the Month/Kit/Row by RowThis category includes all quilts made from any combination of units (patterns, fabrics, etc.) that were pre-selected by someone other than the quiltmaker. Any technique, any size. Quilts entered in this category are not eligible for Best of Show consideration.
First-time EntryQuilter is entering a quilt in a show for the first time (any show, not just the Arkansas Village Quilt Show). Any technique, any size.
Group QuiltA minimum of three different people must have actively participated in the construction/piecing of the quilt. The quilter should not be included in the group count unless that person also contributed to the construction of the quilt. All techniques or combination of techniques are allowed. Any size.
MiscellaneousThis category includes entries that do not fit into any other category, such as, but not limited to yo-yos, cathedral window, crazy quilts, collage quilts, wearables. If a quilt meets the criteria for another category, it is not eligible for this category. Quilts in this category are not required to meet the ”three layer“ rule. False backs are allowed in this category. Any size, any technique.
ModernA modern quilt is defined as one that includes any of the following: minimalism, asymmetry, expansive negative space, bold colors, high contrast, improvisational piecing, grid or straight-line quilting. Any size.
Scrap QuiltQuilt top must incorporate at least 75 different fabrics. Any technique, any size.
Wall QuiltAny quilt that is made to hang on a wall. Any technique. Quilt must have a perimeter less than 300 inches.
JuniorsThis category is for any quilter who has not yet reached their 18th birthday as of July 1, 2019. The Junior Quilter must have constructed the quilt themselves with only direction from an adult. Quilting may have been completed by someone other than the Junior Quilter. Any technique, any size. Quilts entered in this category are not eligible for Best of Show consideration.
